Naturalist Work

Naturalist Certification

I earned my UC Naturalist certification in 2023 after completing an in-depth training in resource management. My focus was on restoring local ecosystems, community education, conservation, and managing and initiating conservation projects.

My First Conservation Project

To complete our naturalist program, we were tasked with designing either a group or solo project. Initially, I wanted to create a booklet showcasing native flora and fauna. However, I decided to challenge myself and try something outside of my comfort zone! I wanted to learn how to outline and achieve hands on environmental restoration. I added the link so you can see my project final and presentation. To sum it up we restored native grasses so the roots would hold in the water for wetland habitat! It worked, we got to see the lake refill, the birds come back, and all in all it was a life changing experience to see what one person was capable of.

Nature Interpretation

Nature Interpretation

After receiving my certification I decided to specialize in nature interpretation. It‘s a process of communicating and connecting people with the natural world, fostering understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the environment. Going beyond stating facts, and often involves hands-on experiences that inspire people to have an on going relationship with the nature.

Classes

Nature Interpretation

I started hosting free guided hikes, plant identification classes, mushroom identification, gardening 101, nature journaling, native herb workshops, wild food 101, etc. I wanted to see how people reacted to my classes, what got them outside and what prevented them from getting outside to get a better understanding of what my immediate community needed for easier access to the outdoors.

Why?

I grew up in the Sacramento Delta with a deep understanding of how important our waterways and ecosystems are. I hope connecting people with Sacramentos outdoor spaces and land history will inspire them to get outside and appreciate and protect our diverse ecosystems. I truly believe that being aware of your natural surroundings can have a profoundly positive impact!

What’s Next?

I hope to host free seasonal classes and fundraisers for nonprofit organizations while hosting some donation based classes for the community! With the rapid decline of natural spaces ordinary people can document plants, animals, and ecosystems that will be important enough for history books. As my knowledge and educational equipment grow I hope to host more classes in the future! Please email me if you are someone interested in setting up a class for your organization, school, or business.
